Tips for Safe Internet & Computer
Usage There are many ways
someone can gain access to your computer. It can be through the
internet or locally with physical access to your computer. You
should learn to make it a habit to think about security both on and
off the internet but its most likely that someone will try to gain
access to your information through the internet because they can do
it from a distant location, even another country where US laws don't
apply. Here are some of the things you can do to protect yourself
from intruders and viruses.
- Avoid using software that is not
from reliable or trusted sources.
- Avoid using free file sharing
programs such as Kazaa, Morpheus and others. They are known to
create problems such as spyware, adware, viruses and even open
up your PC to hackers. If you do decide to use them, do not
leave it running in the background while you're away. Exit and
disconnect from the network completely, otherwise you leave your
ports open for someone to enter.
- Much of the free software on the
internet is not really free. Many times its supported by bundled
Adware or Spyware that will repeatedly pop-up ads, collect your
browsing information and in most cases can slow your PC down
completely.
- When you need free software or
utilities, we recommend Download.com. They offer the largest
selection of downloads while screening for any bundled adware or
spyware.
- Its extremely important that you
have virus protection and a firewall such as ZoneAlarm
- Set your firewall to ask for
your permission every time any programs need access to the
internet. You may set some of the regularly used software not to
ask.
- For local security, use Windows
XP password protection.
- You can also increase security
by password protecting your computer form booting up. You may do
this by going into your BIOS settings when you turn on your
system.
- Always use unique passwords,
preferably containing both letters and numbers.
- Keep your operating system
updated with latest patches. Hackers use patching information to
find vulnerabilities on systems that haven't been updated.
- If you are using a WiFi
connection, make sure you add a secure password to it. Most
wireless routers are not configured to be secure by default, you
need to set security configurations yourself.
- Disconnect from the internet
while away.
